Konold Kid Quotes and Milestones: 2006


January

  • The kids love buffets. Haley had so much fun picking out her own food, and Carter liked his Mac & Cheese so much that he giggled the whole time.
  • Poor Haley has been traumatized by nightmares lately. She talks about them all the time, and every time she makes a wish, she wishes that she wouldn’t have scary dreams anymore.
  • Haley gave her first talk in Primary and did perfectly. She spoke on the promises in the scriptures.
  • The girls at the gym’s kids club say that Carter seems to enjoy being in control of his environment: he likes to be at the front counter with them to see who’s coming and going.
  • Haley insists that Daddy put two wood chips into her snowgirl for her “chests.
  • Haley: “Do you still love me when you’re mad?”
  • Carter plays peek-a-boo.
  • Haley: “10,9,6,7,8,13,18… Mom, how do I count upside down?”
  • Haley tries to pee on the toilet with the lid down. She was mostly asleep, and it went everywhere.
  • Haley to her primary teacher: “If you do something on accident, you say you’re sorry. If you do something on purpose, you sit in time out.”
  • Haley: “Oh cwap.”

February

  • Carter says “Mama” (although he usually says “mamama” instead).
  • The instant we emerged through the portal at a basketball game, Haley begins screaming like a lunatic: “Go Cougars! Go Cougars!”
  • Haley wrote half the letters of the alphabet on her chalkboard – letters that I had no idea that she could write.
  • Haley is always making up her own languages: “'Salakawa’ means ‘I love you,’ Mommy. ‘Salakawa,’ Mommy.”
  • Carter claps.
  • And so it begins … Carter now screams in protest whenever Haley takes a toy or cuts in front of him on the slide.
  • Carter helps clean up toys.
  • Carter says “Dada.
  • Carter claps anytime we say “Good boy!” or “Yay!” He also claps to show he wants something.
  • Carter is the star of the show at Kayleen’s infant development class at SDSU.  He even hugged a couple of the students.

March

  • The kids had a huge water fight in the tub, spraying each other with squirting frogs (I’m not sure where Carter learned how to squirt them).
  • Haley plays a song on Dad’s guitar and then says solemnly: “That song was called ‘My Gift.’”
  • Carter loves to help pick up, and he always claps for himself afterward.
  • Carter starts running.
  • Carter walks backward.
  • Carter folds his arms for the prayer.
  • Haley's prayer: “Please bless Baby Avery to come home soon so I can see her and hold her…”
  • Carter is getting aggressive. If I slap his hand, he hits me in the face.
  • Haley: “How tall am I now?” (When I said she was getting bigger, she took it literally.)
  • Carter helps sweep with a magic wand.
  • Daddy shaved off his beard of over a month: Carter didn’t recognize him and Haley cried and asked, “Where is the hair on your face?”
  • Haley: “Mom, I stepped in dog poop at Alyssa’s today.” Me: “Were your shoes on?” Haley: “No, I had bare feet.” Me: “Was the poop hard or squishy?” Haley: “It was squishy.” Me: “Did you wash your feet?” Haley: “Yeah. I wiped them on the grass.”

April

  • Haley: “Mom, remember where Aunt Priscilla lives? That’s where Joey lives, too, and he’s so, so, so, so special.”
  • Carter says "ball" (ba).
  • Haley to Avery: “You are my precious, precious cousin.”
  • Haley: “Mom, I had an excellent dream last night. It was excellent.”
  • Carter says “No no” (nuh-nuh).
  • Carter says "doggie" (dah-dah).
  • Anytime Carter hears the phone ring, he runs straight for it, calling and pointing, and does that until somebody answers it.
  • We had to move the garbage can into the garage because Carter was throwing all his toys away.
  • Haley: “I’ll save you from the wicky witch!”
  • Haley: “Mom, can you help me with this? Let’s do it together like sisters.”

May

  • Carter does patty cakes all by himself.
  • Carter brushes his teeth.
  • Haley: When told that a neighbor is twelve years old says, “Twelve?! That’s bigger than the world!”
  • Haley: “Do you want me to teach you how to color, Avery? Don’t worry – you can scribble if you want to.”
  • Carter eats an ant after smashing it and smiling at the remains on his finger for a few seconds. He chewed it and seemed to enjoy it.
  • Haley calls sneezes “bless-you’s”.

June

  • Carter says "bird" (Brr).
  • Carter has discovered how much fun it is to flush the toilet.
  • Carter says “Uh-oh.
  • When Daddy asks for a taste of Haley’s chocolate milk, she replies, “Maybe you can get your own drink.”
  • After swim lessons, Seven Peaks, and a bath, Haley says, “I’ve been in a lot of water today!”
  • Carter says “eye” while pointing to it.
  • Carter points to a picture of himself and then to his chest as if to say, “That’s me!”
  • Haley says that she needs to wash off her carnival face painting before church because “it’s not reverent to my face.”
  • Haley prays that she’ll be able to swim underwater (she just failed to pass her swim class because she won’t put her face in).
  • During a game of Hide and Go Seek, Daddy finds Haley standing against the wall. She says, “I’m disguised as a wall decoration!”
  • Carter can just about do Haley’s “Welcome to the ‘60’s” dance.
  • After I told Haley how proud of her I was for putting her face in the water (I bribed her with ice cream), she said, “Yeah. It wasn’t fun.”
  • Carter head-butted Haley in the mouth and made her tooth bleed, then pulled out a chunk of her hair.

July

  • Carter’s only in the 12th percentile for weight (30th percentile for height). The doctor assured me that his “very large” head isn’t a problem.
  • Haley’s primary teacher brought baby pics of the kids to class. Haley goes, “Hey! I have one of those at home!” Her teacher asked who was in the picture, and Haley said, “I think it’s me!”
  • Haley calls cheese-flavored rice cakes “cheesecakes.”
  • When Carter wants me to do something now, he furrows his brow in a great angry face and yells, “Mum-aae!”
  • The kids love to play “freeze dance” and Carter even knows to freeze when the music stops.
  • Haley wrote “Mommy” all by herself.

August

  • Carter says “birdie.”
  • Carter says “moon.”
  • Haley loves to prepare elaborate birthday parties, complete with food, cake, presents, and games. She’s quite the hostess.
  • Anytime I come back into a room, Carter yells “Mama! Mama!” and waves like he hasn’t seen me for days.
  • Carter says “Haley” (A-hee).
  • The kids love the goldfish pond at the gym. One fish is all white with a gold spot on its head. Haley calls it "The Queen” and it’s her special favorite.
  • Haley calls Carter “Carter Boo-Boo.
  • Carter says “Cheese” and “All done.
  • Carter kicks his soccer ball, then raises his fist and growls in triumph.
  • Carter says “apple” and “bear.”

September

  • When Carter likes his food, he yells, “Mama! Mmm.”
  • It’s the 2nd day of school, and already Haley says, “I’m not sure I like preschool anymore. It’s so long!”
  • Carter gets his first time out (for hitting the TV screen).
  • Carter says “airplane” and “pepper.”
  • Well, it’s begun. Haley and Carter fight over toys constantly, both yelling “Mine! Mine!”
  • While looking at a book of construction machinery, Haley pointed to the cherry picker and said, “That’s the dozer-pick-berry.”

October

  • Carter suffers his first soccer-related injury: he tripped over the ball, popped his leg, and couldn’t put any weight on it for several minutes.
  • When we tried on Carter’s cow costume for Halloween he started prancing around me in a circle, going “Moo! Moo!”
  • Haley: “If I win, it’s a race. But if Carter wins, it’s not a race.”
  • Me: “Haley, are you still awake?” Haley: “No.”
  • Chris is out of town and took the Toyota, leaving us with the Jeep. Every time Carter sees the Jeep in the garage, he yells, “Daddy!”
  • Carter’s new word for everything is “Abba-dee,” which is a variation of “apple juice,” although I have no idea what it means.

November

  • Haley tells her friend that she’s “in love with Lincoln. He’s in my school class, and I get to sit next to him, and my teacher doesn’t even know I love him.”
  • Haley announces that dinner is too “slicey” (instead of “spicy”).
  • Whenever Carter hears the words “time out” (regardless of context), he heads for the time out step and pretends to cry.
  • Carter jumps.
  • Carter likes Avery’s Christmas gift so much that when I wrapped it and put it under the tree, he unwrapped it and kept playing with it.

December

  • Haley and Carter love to clink their cups (or lollipops, or whatever) and shout “Cheers!”
  • Haley set up her most elaborate restaurant yet, complete with menus, separate kitchen, service cart, and mood music (a Strawberry Shortcake CD).
  • Haley’s version of  Jingle Bells: “Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse-open sleigh, if you want to sing along, just come and join the play.”
  • Carter says “Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas.”
  • Haley: “What’s that yummy smell? Is that the smell of treats?”
  • Carter can count from 10-1 (he yells “Blastoff!” at the end) but he can’t count from 1-10.
